Why Vietnam women's volleyball declined: Thanh Thuy's 36 points and the system's cracks

At the 2026 Asian Games, the scoreboard beside Tran Thi Thanh Thuy read 36 points. Many fans saw a captain losing form. I saw a system that had burned out its best attacker. Before the tournament, Thanh Thuy had played for Gunma Green Wings in Japan, returned to VTV Binh Dien Long An, then joined four national-team competitions from January. No outside hitter keeps high efficiency on that schedule. Vietnam women's volleyball entered the season as a golden generation. A year earlier the team won the AVC Cup and SEA V.Cup and earned a World Championship berth. In 2026, the AVC Cup ended in third place, SEA V.Cup stage 2 ended in 0–3, the Asian Championship produced one win, and the Asian Games ended in seventh place against a top-four target. Losses to Indonesia twice, the Philippines and Kazakhstan pointed to a structural problem, not a single bad day. The deeper issues were visible on court. Wings 4 and 2 kept getting blocked, pushing the offense to the middle. Middle blocker Bich Thuy became a top scorer—a sign that the setter–wing connection had broken. With Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh injured, the coaching staff used Doan Thi Xuan, Thanh Thuy, and Nguyen Thi Uyen at opposite, which weakened right-side blocking and attack angles.
